Q: what are the side effects of taking ATORVASTATIN for reducing cholesterol?
am taking lipitor which contains atorvastatin mside effects of the medicament and are there articles which talk about this?

A: According to the prescribing information for Lipitor -
Atorvastatin is generally well-tolerated, and side effects are rare. Minor side effects include constipation, diarrhea, fatigue, gas, heartburn, and headache. Atorvastatin should be used with caution in patients with alcohol or other liver diseases. Persistently abnormal liver tests during treatment are rare but may require discontinuation of the medication. Rare cases of muscle inflammation (myositis) and breakdown have been reported with other drugs in this class (HMGCoA reductase antagonists), and it is assumed that this side effect also may occur with atorvastatin. Muscle breakdown causes the release of muscle protein (myoglobin) into the blood and accumulation of the protein in the kidney tubules, resulting in kidney failure.

The medical community’s idea of side effects seems to be different than your and my idea of side effects. They talking about people dying, and how rare it is. On the other hand, if you ask your friends, neighbors, family members, and co-workers about statins, most will tell you that they generally started to feel crappy once they started taking statins. I’m talking about fatigue, and a general feeling of ill health.

Yes, there are many many many articles about statins – and the writers generally talk about the severe side effects that kill you. Nobody seems to be talking about the fact that the statins tend to ruin quality of life.

Q: Why is it dangerous for ladies to eat lots of grapefruits/juice whilst on Lipitor® (Atorvastatin)…?
(Please supply references in your responses to bona fide journals/bulletins).

How much is considered “too much?”

Atorvastatin is one of the statin drugs used to treat some forms of hyperlipidaemia. Its MOA is specific inhibition of HMG-CoA reductase.

Thank you.

A: It slows the liver enzymes that metabolize lipitor???? Leads to high concentration of the drug???

I’d say play it safe and abstain from drinking grapefruit juice altogether.
It’s too bitter anyways.

Q: When does the Patent expire on Lipitor in Philippines? Is any generic available of Atorvastatin in Philippines ?

A: According to Google it doesn’t expire until 2010

Q: why do i have to change from atorvastatin to simvastatin in which the dosage has doubled and i haven’t had a?
this wasn’t decided by the doctor, mainly the receptionist and pharmacist

A: Hello Steven,

The Pharmacist cannot dispense prescription medication without a doctors providing that prescription and a receptionist can definitely not prescribe medication.

The receptionists job is to set up appointments etc to see a physician and they are certainly not qualified to give medical advice, dispense medication, or prescriptions.

A Pharmacist is there to dispense the prescriptions and to ensure they are up to date with medications and to ensure that any medication prescribed by a physician does not conflict with any other medication a patient may already be taking

If you have been given any prescription medication without a prescription the person giving it is committing an illegal act.

I feel that somewhere along the line your doctor feels that you need this other medication and that the dosage should be increased.

If you are unsure or unclear as to who actually prescribed the medication my advice must be to consult your doctor immediately and ask him/her about it.

Both Atorvastatin and Simvastatin (the operative part is ‘Statin’) is a medication which helps to cut down and regulate the amount of cholesterol in your body in order to cut down the risk of a heart attack or stroke.

Q: does atorvastatin has an adverse effect on erection of penis?

A: It can, anything can cause problems for some people.
In most cases it may help. Clearing cholesterol can improve circulation, You need good circulation for a good erection.

Q: Why LIPITOR (atorvastatin) should not be taken with grape fruit juice?
NB: Grape fruit contains potassium !
NB: I don’t mean the cytochrome P450 oxidizing system inhibition, it’s for sure related to the potassium but why i don’t know!

A: Hi, grapefruit juice turns off an enzyme detoxification system in the liver. The liver is responsible for clearing out toxins and strange things from the blood. If this detoxification system is turned off, the drug is not cleared as quickly from the blood and stays around much longer. This means you’ll have a larger dose of the medication than usual.
Hope this helps!

A: atorvastatin is an antilipidemic -which means it controls the amount of fat and cholesterol that circulates in your blood system, not sure about the rest of the question, but if you have a history of stroke, heart attack, or currently have high cholesterol or blood pressure, it is good to be taking it
